WHO hails Britain’s new steroid treatment
The World Health Organisation has hailed as a “lifesaving scientific breakthrough” the UK’s use of a basic steroid to treat severely ill Covid-19 patients, saving about a third of them.
In a breakthrough described by Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, as a “remarkable achievement”, the common steroid dexamethasone was shown to radically improve the chances of survival for the most ill patients.
“This is great news and I congratulate the Government of the UK, the University of Oxford, and the many hospitals and patients in the UK who have contributed to this lifesaving scientific breakthrough,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
