TESD Has Plan In Works For In-school Or Online Class Option

TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP — Administration at Tredyffrin-Easttown School District is still hashing out learning options for the fall 2020 reopening of schools. TESD is working on ways to allow students to attend school in person, or to use a distance learning option. The district will make public a draft of the district’s reopening plan next week.

As required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, in response to the coronavirus emergency, the TESD Board of School Directors must approve a health and safety plan to reopen facilities.

TESD has slated the week of July 20 to present a draft of its reopening plan for student instruction and services this fall.

“Although there is still much uncertainty, if Chester County remains in the green phase or returns to the yellow phase, we plan to open T/E schools, but with significant modifications to accommodate safety and social distancing requirements,” said Richard Gusick, Superintendent of Schools, in an open letter to parents published June 26.

“As a District team, we have been hard at work reviewing the hundreds of pages of changing guidance we have received from the Department of Education, health officials, and other authorities regarding school reopening plans,” said Gusick.

TESD has gathered feedback about the distance learning that went into place last spring. Responses came from over 2,800 parents, 700 students and 280 teachers. The school district also invited comments and ideas not expressly included in the survey, via a special school email inbox, [email protected].

Gusick said in his letter to parents that TESD “received substantial feedback” through the distance learning inbox. The district will accept input through the end of July, he said.

The school district has offered a timeline for unfolding the reopening plan. Before forming the final plan, the school board will schedule a special virtual meeting for the week of July 27, to consider approval of the final fall reopening plan.

In the first weeks of August, families must decide either on their students attending school and following health and safety guidelines, or choose to participate in distance learning.

Classes are schedule to begin on Aug. 31 for grades 1-12.

Gusick told parents, “I am as eager as anyone to see what August will look like,” explaining that the school district has done the work of careful review, consideration and input. “The virus and the pandemic have presented unpredictable twists and turns to health authorities, resulting in regular adjustments to our rules of operation.”
