From significant business changes to noteworthy product launches, there’s always something new happening in the world of design. In this weekly roundup, AD PRO has everything you need to know.

In Pursuit of a More Just World

Nonprofit Rallies Street Artists for a Cause

Italian nonprofit Yourban 2030 has produced a global street art campaign designed to raise funds for Black Lives Matter initiatives and a number of NGOs, as well as to support those particularly impacted by the pandemic. The program, called Color 4 Action, features black-and-white works by artists including Shepard Fairey (known for the iconic Barack Obama “Hope” design), Ron English, Jeremy Fish, and Okuda. Donors who give $25 or more to one of the supported organizations receive a link to download the artists’ coloring book–style drawings.

Design Companies Continue to Step Up

On June 26, East Fork is set to stage its annual fundraiser for Campaign for Southern Equality. The funds raised will benefit Black and Non-Black People of Color (NBPOC) trans and queer artists and grassroots organizers. “When a company decides to host a fundraiser for a good and righteous cause, so often that check is mailed, thank-you notes are written, and the relationship ends there,” Connie Matisse of East Fork tells AD PRO. “And so it has been a true privilege to be in an ongoing, ever-growing relationship with Campaign for Southern Equality….We are proud to help them support efforts led by and for LGBTQ BIPOC to build a more joyful, liberated future for all.”

Elsewhere, direct-to-consumer sofa company Sabai, which was founded by Phantila Phataraprasit and Caitlin Ellen, focused on their own fundraiser. Ellen stated to AD PRO: “At Sabai, we really identify with the notion that there can be a radical re-envisioning of our future….So we decided to raise funds for Reclaim the Block via a raffle for a brand-new sofa. Ultimately, we were able to donate around $3,000 to fund community health and safety. We’re a small business, but we’re hoping we can continue to help out how we can—including donating furniture to housing for the formerly incarcerated.”

Fairs

Maison & Objet Changes Up Its Fall Fair

Yesterday Maison & Objet announced that it would shift its fall fair to take place online. The virtual fair will host a series of digital talks, showrooms, and more come September. Philippe Brocart, managing director of M&O, said in a statement: “Although there are encouraging signs of the pandemic beginning to decrease, we believe there are still far too many uncertainties regarding the travel conditions for international exhibitors and visitors. Furthermore, the lack of clarity regarding the ability to hold large gatherings in early September in France has played a major part in influencing our decision to call off the September edition of Maison & Objet, despite the fact that 80% of stands had already been reserved by April 2020.”

The Postponed Design Miami/ Is Now Officially Canceled

And the same goes for Art Basel. Jen Roberts, CEO of Design Miami/, issued a statement that read: “While we are disappointed not to welcome the international design and art communities to Basel this September, together with our partners at Art Basel and MCH we recognize the responsibility in this decision. I know the Design Miami/ community all over the world continues to champion design expertise and contemporary innovation while we are physically apart. Soon, the brilliant designers, artists, gallerists, curators, and collaborators that make our fair possible will be together. In the meantime, we continue to support our networks and promote design.”

First-Ever Dallas Kips Bay Show House Names Its Location

The inaugural event will take place at 5828 Woodland Drive in Old Preston Hollow’s Woodland Estates neighborhood. Kicking off September 25, the show house is the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club’s top fundraiser. The two-story house spans 11,476 square feet, and is influenced by Provence, France, with details like a pitched slate roof, and ivy-colored, stone and limestone exterior walls. The designers for the event have not yet been named. “This is such an important event for the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Clubs and the design industry alike,” Dan Quintero, the executive director of the organization, said in a statement. “With the hardships so many have faced in 2020, we’re more motivated than ever to host The Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas, to continue raising critical funding for our kids and community, as well as provide an unforgettable opportunity for the Dallas area.”

All About Arts

Frank Lloyd Wright Has a Big Week

Earlier this week just happened to mark Frank Lloyd Wright’s birthday. But Wright posthumously made news for two additional reasons. First, his School of Architecture at Taliesin, which announced it would close earlier this year, is now planning to continue after a name change and a move to Cosanti and Arcosanti, nearby institutions designed by Paolo Soleri. Second, the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio and Frederick C. Robie House in Chicago’s Oak Park and Hyde Park neighborhoods are reopening for tours, following the directives of the governor’s “Restore Illinois” plan. Interior, outdoor, and biking tours started Thursday, with certain protocols in place.

McKinnon and Harris Is Now Shoppable Online

While some are bringing the outdoors in, McKinnon and Harris is taking it online. As of today, the outdoor-furniture maker is offering consumers access to its once trade-only offering with the unveiling of a digital storefront managed through 1stdibs. The company’s bestselling Perrow drinks cart and Pavilion VI club chair are among the e-shop’s initial listings, which are all available and ready to ship at purchase time. Sibling cofounders Will and Anne Massie will also have pieces from their personal antiquities collections—some of which have inspired past McKinnon and Harris designs—scattered throughout the online shop.

Farooq Kathwari, Ethan Allen’s president, chairman, and CEO, has been honored with this year’s Ascend A-list Award. Presented by Ascend, North America’s largest pan-Asian organization for business professionals, the honor recognizes global leadership. “It’s a privilege to be in the company of leaders who are transforming business and government in the United States and beyond,” Kathwari said in a statement. “It has been the honor of my life, as an American by choice, to become the leader of a quintessential American brand while working to advance human rights around the globe.”

Harvard Names Sustainability Prizewinner

The Harvard Graduate School of Design’s Wheelwright Prize for early-career architects was just announced. The innovative winning proposal by Daniel Fernández Pascual, “Being Shellfish: The Architecture of Intertidal Cohabitation,” advocates using regenerative seaweed and shellfish in building materials, such as concrete, for more sustainable construction.
