How to make a budget skincare routine entirely from food

frank lampard

Guys, I just scored the best vitamin C skincare product on the market—for under a dollar. Seriously. 79 cents! No, I did not get some too-cheap-to-be-true counterfeit online. (I’m insulted you would even ask.) I got it from the grocery store. It’s…an orange.

I know that sentence may fill you with rage—especially if you’ve spent upwards of $100 on vitamin C serums in the past (which, hi, I totally have, too) or you’ve been fed the lie that foods and supplements don’t help your skin. Allow me to gently break the news: You don’t have to spend a ton of money on good, clean skin care, and you can, in fact, eat your way to healthier skin with the right foods. I’ve been doing it for years.

Before you scoff, you should know that I have tried all the skin care. And when I say all the skin care, I

These Massage Therapists Worry About the Effects of COVID-19 on the Future of Their Industry

frank lampard

While the pandemic has been difficult for many, for those who are in the business of touch, the pain of social distancing has cut a level deeper. Relying entirely on in-person, hands-on services, massage therapists saw their business wiped out entirely in the blink of an eye when social distancing became a nearly ubiquitous mandate.

While their business has been on ice, some massage therapists have already pivoted to new ventures, while others are holding the line until they can return to what they know best. Areefa Mohamed, a New York City-based massage therapist who has been practicing for 10 years now, relates all too well. She’s found herself completely out of work since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. “COVID-19 has affected me as a therapist because we are not physically able to help clients or to physically work. It’s a scary time and not being able to alleviate

Blogging can be the best business to start with little money. Some bloggers actually launch their websites for $0.

Aloe vera producers are being squeezed as people make DIY hand sanitizer

frank lampard

Amidst the ongoing coronavirus crisis, Vicki Sherlock had a hard time finding hand sanitizer.

She decided to make her own using rubbing alcohol, which she had in the cabinet, and aloe vera, a product that was alarmingly hard to find.

“It’s DIY time,” Sherlock said as she browsed the internet for a bottle of aloe vera gel. The local Vitamin Shoppe sold out. Her neighborhood Target was out of stock. A nearby Walmart didn’t have any available for curbside pick up.

“I really didn’t think a basic bottle of aloe vera would be this difficult to locate,” Sherlock said.

She’s among a wave of Americans seeking to make hand cleaners amidst a national shortage of select sanitary products.

First, the pandemic created a scarcity of hand sanitizers at stores and online across the globe. Now, more people are resorting to the do-it-yourself method. And manufacturers of one of the key

What It’s Like to Be an Advice Columnist During a Global Pandemic

frank lampard

In the weeks before the coronavirus reshaped the lives of people around the world, Daniel M. Lavery, who writes the “Dear Prudence” advice column at Slate, received an unusual letter. The writer, in the course of asking for tips for dealing with a husband who kept leaving bits of toenail around the house, admitted to dealing with the problem by putting the toenail bits in his coffee cup.

By the time Lavery answered the question in April, the world had changed–and so had his thinking on the issue. As the increased closeness of shelter-in-place orders amplified existing frustrations, what might that marriage look like? “I think about this letter writer a lot,” Lavery says.

By now, as the world changes once again, questions that address the pandemic directly have been filling his inbox for months. There was the reader looking for adjudication in a dispute with a nurse friend who

Online programs used for coronavirus-era school promise results. The claims are misleading

This story about education software was produced by The Hechinger Report, a nonprofit, independent news organization focused on inequality and innovation in education. Sign up for the Hechinger newsletter.

Coronavirus school closures in all 50 states sent educators and parents scrambling to find online learning resources to keep kids busy and productive at home. Website traffic to the homepage for IXL, a popular tool that lets students practice skills across five subjects through online quizzes, spiked in March. Same for Matific, which gives students math practice tailored to their skill level, and Edgenuity, which develops online courses.

All three of these companies try to hook prospective users with claims on their websites about their products’ effectiveness. Matific boasts that its game-based activities are “proven to help increase results by 34 percent.” IXL says its program is “proven effective” and research “has shown over and over that IXL produces real results.”
